Get ready for MTD for Income Tax as a landlord with FreeAgent

The problem

MTD for Income Tax means quarterly updates instead of one annual return, and spreadsheets won't cut it on their own.

The result

Rent and costs are recorded per property in FreeAgent, and quarterly updates go straight to HMRC.

How to set it up: FreeAgent

  1. Check if and when MTD for Income Tax applies to you on GOV.UK (it depends on qualifying income).
  2. Set up a FreeAgent landlord account and add each property, with ownership splits if you own jointly.
  3. Connect your bank feed (for example Monzo Business Pro/Team, or an Open Banking feed) so rent and costs flow in.
  4. Assign income and costs to properties as they arrive.
  5. Submit each quarterly update from FreeAgent before the deadline.
